Two people were injured when a car went off a highway and hit some trees early Saturday morning in Aitkin County.

The Minnesota State Patrol said Justin R. Kafer, 33, of McGregor was southbound on state Highway 65 about two miles south of McGregor in a 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass when he lost control of the vehicle. The Cutlass went into the northbound ditch sideways and the vehicle vaulted off a field approach before coming to rest against some trees. The accident was reported at 3:20 a.m., the Patrol said.

Both Kafer and his passenger, Helen C. Hallstrom, 32, of Brook Park, Minn., were injured. The State Patrol described the injuries as serious but not life-threatening. Kafer was taken to St. Luke’s hospital in Duluth, where he was listed in fair condition Saturday afternoon. It wasn’t reported if Hallstrom was hospitalized. The Patrol said alcohol was detected in Kafer’s system. The road condition at the time of the accident was described as dry.

Aitkin police assisted at the scene.
